Veterinary Care

Before you bring your puppy home, you'll need to select a veterinarian. The process is much the same as choosing your own medical doctor. You'll want to get recommendations from friends and neighbors, check credentials, then visit the clinic to find out if it's right for you. Here's a checklist of things to consider:

Rapport - Your veterinarian should be someone you're comfortable with since a poppy best health insurance is a good relationship between his owner and his veterinarian.

Facilities - Are they clean? Is the staff caring and helpful? Do the office hours work with your schedule? How do they provide for emergency care during office hours? You'll want to know these answers before making your final selection.

Location - Traveling with a sick or injured puppy can be stressful A location that is convenient for you can be a real advantage for you and your puppy.

Emergency Care Facilities - You'll want to be sure the veterinarian you choose has made provisions for emergency care, if not at his/her own facilities, at a location that you'll find convenient in an emergency situation.

Nutrition. Puppies start to nibble on moistened sold food at three to four weeks of age but are typically not ready for weaning until six to eight weeks. During weaning, feed moistened puppy food. (1 part water to 3 parts puppy food). Make sure plenty of freshwater is available.

Behavior & Training. This is one of the most exciting times in a puppies development. He is ready to learn and eager to please. With the proper guidance your puppy will grow from an inquisitive little ball of fur into an ideal companion. The ideal time to bring your puppy home is between 9 and 12 weeks since it is during this time that the pecking order is established among litter mates. When your puppy becomes a member of your family, in his view you become his new pack. Remember, there can only be one leader in a pack, and in your home you must be the leader! It's a step by step process, and it begins as you prepare to walk through the door with your new puppy.
